The Charlottesville chapter of Buy Fresh Buy Local was started by the Piedmont Environmental Council in 2007 and serves the City of Charlottesville, as well as the Counties of Albemarle, Greene, Fluvanna, and Louisa. The Buy Fresh Buy Local brand was created by an organization called Food Routes.

Buy Fresh Buy Local's goal is to help consumers find local products while building relationships between growers, food artisans, farmers’ markets, retailers, restaurants, and institutions. Buy Fresh Buy Local publishes an annual local food guide with listings of local food producers, restaurants, farmers markets, CSAs and other organizations involved in keeping local food available to the Charlottesville community. Recently[when?], five additional Buy Fresh Buy Local chapters have been added to serve the central Virginia region.
