Book Baskets, a local nonprofit, was founded in 1995 by Mildred Abraham with the goal of encouraging reading through book ownership. A small bookplate is placed in the front of each book, allowing the recipient to identify the gift book as his or her own.[1] Last year, over 11,000 books were given to Charlottesville and Albemarle County children.[2]

While the organization does raise some funds to buy new books, a majority of the books they give come from families in the community who place their “gently used” books in a Book Baskets wicker basket placed in area schools.[2] Book Baskets collects books from 24 schools.[1]
