Avon Street connects the Downtown Mall with the Belmont-Carlton neighborhood via the Belmont Bridge. The portion of Avon Street north of Monticello Avenue is part of Virginia State Route 20. In Albemarle County, the road is signed Avon Street Extended or County Road 742, whose southern terminus is Scottsville Road. Avon Street is one of the city's designated entrance corridors.

The street also crosses the CSX Railroad tracks that separate downtown Charlottesville from Belmont via the Belmont Bridge.

History

Avon Street replaced 6th Street SE as the major north-south entrance to Charlottesville sometime in the 1970's or 1980's. [1]
