The Central Gazette was Charlottesville's first newspaper. It was published weekly from 1820 to 1827. [1] [2]

Background

Clement P. and John H. McKennie began publishing The Central Gazette on January 29, 1820. The weekly paper ceased publication in July of 1827. [2]

The paper quickly became a popular medium of advertisements for the area as well as neighboring counties. Although some original pieces were produced, the paper's content principally consisted of extracts from other publications, disseminating news on political matters and international affairs.[3]

The publication evolved into the Virginia Advocate.

Availability

Editions of the newspaper are available at the University of Virginia and the Library of Congress. [2] Some of the publications are also available on the Virginia Chronicle website maintained by the Library of Virginia.
