There are many different definitions for the word "neighborhood" and many interpretations of what they are.

In the city of Charlottesville, the planning department has been called Neighborhood Development Services for many years. Otherwise the word does not appear in the city code.

In the county of Albemarle, the word is used in a zoning district known as the Neighborhood Model.

This portal is intended to continue to be a place for basic information about neighborhoods in the community as well as references to how the word is used in different contexts. There are neighborhood associations, for instance. In Charlottesville, these are informally recognized by the city but Albemarle does not keep a similar list for its similar areas. However, Albemarle does have seven community advisory committees that represent sections of the urbanized areas.
